- Who We Are
Nicky wanted to lose weight. He had enough with how he was feeling about himself and decided to use the bike to do this. Between his friends, family and coach Blair Davies at Dig Deep Coaching he went on to complete his first ever Ironman on 6th July 2014 at the Ironman European Championships in Frankfurt.
Read his story.
‘About 2 years ago I decided to get a mountain bike to help me lose weight. I got hooked pretty quick and bought a ROAD bike (yes I used to laugh at people out on bikes lol)!! So I started training and watching what I was eating and the weight starting coming off but never once was it easy!! Continuously battling a craving for junk food and many times breaking and giving into it but I always started again and again, it was a long hard battle (and still is)!!
I started doing a bit of club racing and that was demoralising as I was getting dropped race after race but then I aimed for a finish and a top 10 (if I was lucky) and managed both in the next race and that gave me motivation to keep going and my results kept getting better and better!!
This time last year a 'few' decided we would do an IRONMAN!! So we signed up and loads of people thought we were mad and ones also said, 'they will never do that!!' and when times got tough that stuck with me!! So I got stuck into the swimming and running along with the bike training and the hard work started!! It took a massive commitment and the thing I still struggled with the most was eating JUNK!! Weight loss was my long time goal and these events were to help me get there. I'm still not where I want to be but I definitely am getting closer as each month goes by!!
I owe a lot of thanks to people who kept me going and kept me training but there is too many to mention and they all know who they are!! Now it’s time for a bit of racing and getting leaner!! All the hard work and early mornings and long training sessions were worth it when I came up the finishing chute on Sunday and the announcer said ‘Nicky Gormley, you are an Ironman!!' Also I couldn't have done it with a better bunch of lads!!’ #ANYTHINGISPOSSIBLE
Nicky now has raced two A4 races whereby he was upgraded to A3 after coming 3rd and 5th. #coachingworks #greatattitude
